Remember the Little Things: What Do Your Social Media Pages Say About You?
Recent statistics show that the vast majority of hiring managers - as much as 93% according to Jobvite - will take a look at a candidate's social media presence before deciding whether to hire them or not. The same survey showed that as many as 55% of the hiring managers they spoke to have reconsidered hiring a candidate based on what they find, with the candidate failing to be offered the job as a result. This is becoming a bigger subject as more and more people accept social media as part and parcel of their everyday lives. So what does your social media profile say about you? When was the last time you checked your privacy settings to see whether it's more than just your friends and family that can see what you're up to? Do you have pictures on your Facebook page that you'd rather an employer couldn't see? Could an innocent picture or comment be misinterpreted? It's important that you control not only who can see your pages, but also what you post. Posting pictures of yourself when you've had a great night out might be fun for you and your friends, but a prospective employer might decide you have some issues, especially if it happens often. Nobody is saying you should stop using social media - on the contrary - it could be a great shop window for you to show who you really are. Remember when you're posting that you may not be able to entirely control who sees the comments you make and the images you upload and make sure your profiles are working for you and not against you.
